How does a cantilever bridge work?

  1. Think of a diving board. One end is anchored. From this base, a horizontal “board” extends. A person can bounce up and down on the board, especially at the end, and it will be held fast at the anchor point/base.
  2. That’s not going to work for a bridge, though. A car would drive out on the horizontal deck and then what? Plunge to the depths?
  3. Imagine two cantilever structures meeting with a gap in between. Then, imagine a straight truss bridge used to “bridge” the gap.
  4. Now, a vehicle can make its way from one base to the other by passing over the joining truss bridge.
  5. Ta Da!
