Narrative Nonfiction

Getting Started: From Idea to Writing Plan

How many times have you had a terrific idea that stayed just that - a terrific idea - because you didn't have the tools or a process for getting beyond that initial idea? In this five-week class you'll go from idea to solid writing with a research plan for your work in narrative nonfiction.

Basics: Using the Tools of Narrative to Tell a Story

Making use of narrative structure when writing about true events brings your reader into your tale. The more you know about how narrative works and where those techniques can be applied to your factual material, the better able you will be to create a nuanced story that keeps your reader's attention. In this 10-week workshop, we'll read samples of strong narrative nonfiction and discuss the use of the elements of narrative, write short pieces of our own, critique each other's work, and learn about the ins and outs of writing narrative nonfiction.

Intermediate: The Sample Chapter or Article Draft

Nonfiction is sold from a proposal that includes a sample chapter – usually the first – as a key element. In this 10-week workshop we’ll lay out the overall structure of your book by honing the concept, determining the scope, creating a tentative table of contents, and writing a draft of the first chapter. We’ll read samples of strong narrative nonfiction and discuss the use of the elements of narrative in your draft. We’ll discuss the craft of narrative nonfiction as it applies to our work.

Advanced: Preparing to Submit Your Work

In this 10-week workshop, you will create your annotated table of contents and prepare the final version of your sample chapter. We’ll critique each other’s work for what works, what doesn’t, what could be stronger, and where elements of craft could be used to better effect. By the end, you’ll have an annotated table of contents and sample chapter for your book proposal.

Book Proposal: Writing the Nonfiction Book Proposal

In this 5-week workshop, we will discuss the elements of a solid book proposal. As you create these elements for your own work, we’ll evaluate each other’s proposals to be certain we’ve created proposals that make a strong case for the publication of our books.
