The Spring 2013 issue of Diabetic Living had three apps for your phone. I don’t know about you, but my phone is the one thing that is always with me, so I checked them out. Next up? MapMyWalk.

The idea of MapMyWalk is to use the GPS in your phone to — well — map your walk. You can do more than that, of course. You can keep a food diary, track your activity, and join a virtual community. There’s a lot to learn at their site, including routes that have been created by others in your area.

I like it because it takes the guess work out of how far you’ve traveled in your 30 minutes or more ¬†of walking each day. I’m not always sure my pedometer is picking up each step. Plus, 2,450 steps is not nearly enough – but what exactly is it? This way I know I’m a slacker. No doubt about it!

I don’t know about you, but I’ve decided that the only way I’m going to do what I need to do for my health – until it kicks in that there are positive benefits – is if I incorporate a bit of fun into it. I wish it were not so. I wish I were the person who is going to jump out of bed on a gloomy Monday morning at 6:30 am, grab my sweats, and dash into the dim morning light to get in my 30 minutes. I know I’m not. And I know I need to. So – until my personality change clicks in, I’m going to give this app a try.
