The Spring 2013 issue of Diabetic Living had three apps for your phone. I don’t know about you, but my phone is the one thing that is always with me, so I checked them out. Next up? MapMyWalk.

The idea of MapMyWalk is to use the GPS in your phone to — well — map your walk. You can do more than that, of course. You can keep a food diary, track your activity, and join a virtual community. There’s a lot to learn at their site, including routes that have been created by others in your area.

I like it because it takes the guess work out of how far you’ve traveled in your 30 minutes or more  of walking each day. I’m not always sure my pedometer is picking up each step. Plus, 2,450 steps is not nearly enough – but what exactly is it? This way I know I’m a slacker. No doubt about it!

I don’t know about you, but I’ve decided that the only way I’m going to do what I need to do for my health – until it kicks in that there are positive benefits – is if I incorporate a bit of fun into it. I wish it were not so. I wish I were the person who is going to jump out of bed on a gloomy Monday morning at 6:30 am, grab my sweats, and dash into the dim morning light to get in my 30 minutes. I know I’m not. And I know I need to. So – until my personality change clicks in, I’m going to give this app a try.
